Hydrofracking

NOON has been involved with the effort to educate about and stop Hydrofracking in NYS since the Onondaga leaders brought it to our attention several years ago. Jack Ramsden is our lead on this project. Email | 424-1454

Important issues worked on:

A 24″ gas pipeline, proposed to run from the Millennium Pipeline in Broome Co. to southern Onondaga County, has being challenged by a coalition including ShaleshockCNY. (shaleshockcny.org/pipeline.html)
NYS’s moratorium preventing Hydrofracking ran out and Governor Cuomo can decide at any time whether to allow it or not.
Towns are passing bans to prevent Hydrofracking. Dryden’s and Middlefield’s bans have been upheld in court.

NOON has been working with allies across New York to advocate a total ban on hydrofracking in the state. In January, 2013, thousands of protesters called for a ban at Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address in Albany. Then, anti-frackers delivered more than 204,000 comments against the proposed fracking regulations. The movement to ban hydrofracking is growing daily!

What is Hydrofracking?

Slickwater Horizontal Hydrofracking is a new process for natural gas extraction that could shortly be a regular process seen in upstate New York because of the extensive Marcellus and Utica Shale deposits found throughout Central New York and the Southern Tier. NOON and the Onondaga Nation oppose hydrofracking because of the intensive resource use and the environmental and health impacts that are often incurred from the drilling process, inevitable accidents, and their aftermath. Hydrofracking will harm our communities, our land, our water, and our air; the impacts will be felt for generations.

Attending a local meeting or going on a web site and learning more about Hydrofracking.
Putting a sign in your yard.
Working in your town to get a ban if needed.
Calling Governor Cuomo (866-584-6799, state your name, say you want fracking banned in NYS).
Attending a local or go to Albany for a rally.
Helping educate you friends, neighbors, and family about the environmental dangers.

NOON Releases White Paper on Hydrofracking Flowback Fluids

NOON is pleased to announce the release of “Wastewater Wasteland,” a major investigation into the devastation being caused by hydrofracking flowback fluids in Pennsylvania and similar damage which will occur in New York State if fracking is permitted here. New Yorkers Against Fracking is a coalition of New York State consumer advocacy, health, religious, food, and environmental organizations and dozens of grassroots groups calling for a ban.

Frack Action is engaged in a legislative advocacy, grassroots organizing, and public awareness campaign aimed at exposing the truth on fracking and building the critical mass necessary to stop it. It has organizers based in Central New York, Hudson Valley, and New York City working with volunteers across the state. frackaction.com
