War Update

Syria: After alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government Obama has authorized lethal military aid for the Syrian rebels. There is no substantial evidence of the Syrian government using chemical weapons,[i] however the UN has evidence that the rebels have used chemical weapons,[ii] and the Syrian government has seized chemical weapon stockpiles from the rebel sufficient to destroy a whole city.[iii] The US has deployed patriot missiles and F-16 fighter jets in Jordan[iv] in addition to missiles and planes in neighboring Turkey and Israel. Millions of Syrian refugees are being forcibly held in camps in Jordan and Turkey,[v] providing a source of desperate men that are hired by the CIA, Qatar,[vi] and Saudi Arabia, as mercenaries to fight the Syrian government. Recent data relayed to NATO shows that 70% of Syrians now support the government, while only 10% support the rebels.[vii]

Turkey: This NATO member and recipient of US military aid has been experiencing unrest since May terrorist attacks near the Syrian border triggered protests.[viii] Subsequent protests over the destruction of a central park have since expanded into demonstrations against president Erdogan’s authoritarianism, corruption, and foreign policy.[ix] The planned destabilization of the region has advanced with Turkey funneling fighters and weapons into Syria and supporting the balkanization of Iraq through Kurdish independence.[x]

Egypt: The Egyptian military seized control of the government on July 3. The High Council on the Armed Forces have appointed economist Hazem el- Beblawi as Prime Minister and US favorite[xi] Mohammed Al-Baradei as vice president. The coup comes after weeks of massive protests against president Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), and Sharia law. Morsi had closed supply lines to Palestine, brokered deals with the IMF, and supported Jihad against Syria.[xii] Protestors have also denounced US support for the MB and the Free Syrian Army,[xiii] although the General in charge of the coup is a graduate of the US Army War College[xiv] and the Egyptian military receives $1.3 billion in military aid from the US every year. [xv]

Honduras: Members of congress have petitioned secretary of state Kerry to stop providing the Honduran government with $8.7 million in military aid/year. The regime is complicit in the use of death squads, violation of human rights by police and military personnel, and judicial corruption.[xvi] The military overthrew the progressive Honduran president Zelaya in 2009 and then held elections marred by exclusion and fraud.[xvii] Mining companies are using police, military, and paramilitary forces to eliminate local resistance to operations which threaten campesino communities.[xviii]
